For some days now, the internet has been awash with the sad story of Mary Habila who died on July 27,2026 under controversial circumstances in the private home of the honourable Minister of Works , David Umahi, in Uburu, Ohaozara Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.
The unfortunate incident has generated public discourse with many calling for thorough investigation with a view to unraveling the actual cause of Mary Habila’s death.
Speaking on the ugly development,Senator David Umahi expressed shock that people could suspect he had a hand in the death of the innocent girl.
He stated that Mary Habila was like a daughter to him as he has cordial relationship with her family for about three years that Mary worked with him.
Honourable Umahi said Mary was a nurse working with David Umahi University of Medical Sciences, Uburu and was on secondment to the ministry of works.
He shared some exciting moments where Mary had to travel with his team to Lagos and his village
In a press conference, the minister claimed that Mary had health condition that she was managing at the time, recalling taking her for medication in Turkish hospital, Abuja, where he spent 2.2 million naria on her medical bills ,some time in April.
He also said, Mary’s boy friend was aware of her prevailing medical condition and even spoke with Mary in the hour of her death, calling for the call log of Mary’s boy friend for more clarification.
Honourable Umahi expressed shock at the politicization of the death of the poor girl, raining curses on perpetrators while asking God to punish his family if he has a hand in the unfortunate incident.
He said he has asked the police to conduct autopsy on the deceased so that the whole world will know the cause of Mary’s death.
Meanwhile, Mr Tanko Habila Moses, Mary’s father, has petitioned the Inspector General of Police, asking for the immediate release of his daughter’s body for burial, opposing calls for autopsy on cultural and traditional grounds.
However,the Ebonyi State Police Command has launched an investigation into the matter, demanding autopsy to determine actual cause of Mary Habila’s death.
Before her death, Mary ,a native of Nok in Jaba Local Government Area of Kaduna State was a staff of David Umahi University of Medical Sciences, Uburu and was attached to the Minister’s medical team as a nurse ,on secondment.
She had travelled with the Minister’s team to his village Uburu, in company of her colleague and friend, Anita Baaka, a physiotherapist from Benue State and spent the night in the Minister’s guest house only to be found dead the next morning.
