Abducted Oyo school pupils and teachers gain freedom after 56 days in captivity

Jubilation greeted the air in Nigeria on Friday, July 10,2026, following the release of abducted pupils and teachers from Oriire Local Government Area in Oyo State, from kidnappers' den after spending 56 days in captivity.

The development has received accolades by the ruling APC and even leaders of the opposition parties in the country who called on the Federal Government to take decisive measures to prevent a recurrence,while strengthening security across the country.

Meanwhile,Senator Ali Ndume,a vocal APC lawmaker has applauded the feat, but urged the Federal Government and security agencies to double efforts to rescue dozens of victims still in kidnappers ' captivity in his constituency.

Emerald news gathered that residents,travellers and passers-by in Ogbomosho area of Oyo State were in high spirit celebrating the return of the abducted victims as the news of their freedom filtered in the air.

The rescue of the pupils and teachers was confirmed on Friday evening by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy,Bayo Onanuga who disclosed that eight suspected kidnappers were arrested during the operation and are currently in the custody of the Department of State Services ,adding that several other members of the gang were neutralised in the course of the operation.
He said the victims were rescued by a combined security operation without the Federal Government acceding to the kidnappers' demand for the release of a Boko Haram leader standing trial for terrorism.

President Bola Tinubu who expressed happiness over the successful operation said his administration would ensure justice for the victims and family of the slain teacher , Michael Oyedokun .
He further directed emergency response agencies to work in synergy with the Oyo State government to provide medical care and other relief support for the rescued victims.
President Tinubu praised the security agencies for a successful operation without collateral damage and reinstated his administration's resolve to nib the menace of insecurity in the bud.

The abducted Oyo school pupils and teachers were kidnapped on May 15,2026 and remained in captivity for 56 days before their freedom yesterday July 10,2026, through a combined security operation.
