More than 1,000 residents of Enugwu-Agidi turned out on Friday, August 7, for the 2026 Anambra State Association, USA (ASA-USA) Medical Mission and Education, in one of the most extensive community healthcare interventions recently witnessed in the area. The outreach, held at Enugwu-Agidi Secretariat, brought together elderly men and women, youths and other residents who came from different parts of the community to access free medical services. From the early hours of the morning until the evening, the venue remained active as residents moved through registration, consultation, assessment, screening and treatment points, creating an atmosphere of excitement and appreciation over the opportunity to receive professional healthcare without financial barriers.

The medical mission was organised by ASA-USA in conjunction with Enugwu-Agidi Progressive Union, USA (EPU-USA), with support from EBU-NIG, EPU-USA Atlanta Chapter, Prince Dr. Chinedu Ikeanyi, and Oba Sir Sunny Okoye, among others. More than 100 medical practitioners and healthcare professionals were on ground to attend to the large number of beneficiaries. The medical team provided different categories of healthcare services, including medical consultations, professional assessments, screenings, treatment, medication and health education. Essential drugs and other medical supplies were also made available to beneficiaries, ensuring that residents who required medication after consultation could receive appropriate treatment as part of the outreach.

The scale of the turnout reflected both the community's interest in preventive healthcare and the importance of bringing such services directly to residents. Elderly beneficiaries were particularly visible among those seeking medical attention, while women, youths and other members of the community also participated actively. Rather than limiting the exercise to consultation alone, the organisers created different service points to enable medical professionals to attend to patients according to their needs. The arrangement allowed the exercise to continue steadily throughout the day, with the organisers maintaining that everyone who came for attention would be attended to. By the close of the exercise in the evening, the large number of residents who had presented themselves for care had been attended to.

The outreach also attracted participation from traditional and community leadership. HRH Igwe Michael Chidozie Okekeuche (Okpalariam III Enugwu-Agidi), accompanied by the President-General of Enugwu-Agidi Town Union, Chief Pius Nwankwo (Ozo Okpete), toured the various medical stations to observe the services being provided. They were joined by the Member representing Njikoka 1 Constituency, Hon. Chidi Ibemeka; Dr. Osita Anameze (Onowu Enugwu-Agidi); and the Vice President-General, Comrade Emeka Ementa, among other stakeholders.

Speaking during his inspection, Igwe Michael Chidozie Okekeuche welcomed the initiative and stressed the importance of access to quality healthcare in promoting the wellbeing of the community. He encouraged residents to make effective use of the opportunity while expressing appreciation to ASA-USA for bringing professional medical services closer to the people. The President-General, Chief Pius Nwankwo, focused on the impressive response from the community, describing the massive turnout as evidence of the importance residents attach to accessible healthcare. He also commended the coordination of the exercise and the cooperation of the people throughout the programme.

Dr. Osita Anameze, highlighted the collective effort behind the successful outreach, commending the medical professionals, sponsors, volunteers and community stakeholders who contributed to making the exercise possible. The community leaders, in their separate remarks, expressed special appreciation to ASA-USA and specifically recognised Prince Dr. Chinedu Ikeanyi, President of EPU-USA, and Oba Sir Sunny Okoye, Emeritus President of EPU-USA and one of the pioneers of the initiative, for their efforts in ensuring that Enugwu-Agidi benefited from the medical mission.

Hon. Chidi Ibemeka, who also visited the exercise, commended the organisers for the intervention and the benefits it brought to residents.
For Oba Sir Sunny Okoye, the medical mission represented more than a one-day healthcare intervention. Speaking on the initiative, he explained that its driving force was the desire to give back to the community and contribute meaningfully to the welfare of the people. He commended ASA-USA and EPU-USA for the initiative and thanked the people of Enugwu-Agidi for their massive turnout. He also indicated that the medical outreach forms part of a broader development vision, with youth empowerment programmes and other community-focused initiatives among the areas being considered.

The exercise culminated in a reception for the medical delegation at the palace of Igwe Michael Chidozie Okekeuche following the successful completion of the outreach. The reception was attended by the President-General and members of his executive, Dr. Osita Anameze, Oba Sir Sunny Okoye and other community stakeholders. The Igwe expressed further appreciation to ASA-USA and EPU-USA for the intervention and prayed for more initiatives capable of benefiting the people, while Onowu equally acknowledged everyone whose contributions helped make the programme successful.

Responding on behalf of ASA-USA, Mr. Onyi Erinne, Chairman of the ASA-USA Board, thanked Igwe Michael Chidozie Okekeuche and the people of Enugwu-Agidi for the warm reception and hospitality extended to the delegation. He expressed satisfaction with the collaboration and indicated a willingness to see further engagements between the diaspora organisation and the community.

The 2026 ASA-USA Medical Mission and Education demonstrated what diaspora-community collaboration can achieve when resources, professional expertise and community participation are brought together. With more than 1,000 residents benefiting from medical attention, assessments, treatment, medication and health education, and more than 100 medical professionals working through the day to ensure that beneficiaries were attended to, the outreach left the community with a strong sense of appreciation and renewed optimism about the potential of similar initiatives to support healthcare, youth empowerment and broader community development.
